Prior to 1837, records of christenings, marriages and burials were the
responsibility of parishes throughout England and Wales. Records of these
are held as Archdeacon Transcripts in most parishes; however their accuracy
and completeness depended on the diligence and application of the local
clergy over the years. On 1 July 1837, a civil registration system for
births, marriages and deaths was introduced in England and Wales.
Registration was undertaken by civil registrars who reported to the
Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London, now part
of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The central registry was
called the St. Catherine House Index. These were reported quarterly as a
folio number (which refers to particular districts) and a page number.
Initially for some years, adherence to this law was haphazard, and the
reliability of centralised records remained problematical for some time
afterwards.
The data provided is in chronological order and refers to
years, quarters (March, June, Sept and December), folio (district) numbers
and page numbers. By quoting these data, certificates may be obtained from
the General Records Office in London where the St Catherine's House index is
held.
The index can be viewed also at Latter Day Saints' Family History
Centres where it is held on microfiche - one microfiche per quarter.
