The Commander in Chief's Bodyguard EDGE, JOHN:* Enlisted, Frederick County, Va., February IO, 1777, for three years, a private, Captain Thomas Blackwell's Company, Tenth Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel Edward Stevens; transferred, Morristown, N.  Born 1753; occupation, farmer; married Nancy Cummins (born 176o; died, Belmont County, Ohio, February 5, I856), Fauquier County, Va., January 6, 178i; died, Belmont County, Ohio, July 4, i830, with the following issue: Molly, born November 7, I78i; Rosanch, born September I, I783 (married Dunfee) ; Israel, born April 30, I785; John, born August 2o, 1786; Levincy, born September 5, I787; and Letice, born November II, I791.

From the book, "Belmont County Before 1830", the following was noted; On the 27th day of July, John Edge, aged 67 years, resident of Belmont Co. (1820) being duly sworn .... stated that he served in the Revolutionary War as a Private regular soldier in Morgan Alexander I s Company, as he believes, in the year 1776, but does not recolect the time distinctly; that the place where he enlisted was at Frederick County in Virginia, and that he enlisted to serve the period of one year, which period he faithfully served under the same company commander and under the same captain as aforesaid. At the end of the year he was verbally discharged from service and in about 4 months after his first term of service, he again enlisted under Capt. Thomas Blackwell as a private to serve the period of 3 years, which period he faithfully served and recieved an honorable discharge from under the hand of his last captain, Captain Livingston which discharge has been lost by time and accident. That he has heretofore made application for a pension under the Act of Congress of March, 1818 and which application was dated the 8th day of April, 1819, No. 9059. He makes a declaration of his assets totalling $69.00. His family consists of 4 persons including himself, my wife Nancy, aged 64 years, sickly and unable to support herself along with 2 grandchildren, one named John Edge, aged 13 years in August next, and the other Thomas Way, aged between 4 and 5 years, neither of which is able to earn their own support. None of my children live with me. That he is a farmer and laborer, and at the present time living on part of his son-in-laws land which in charity he has allowed him to stay upon without paying rent and from which, by his own labor he obtains a scanty support - ------ /S/ JOHN EDGE, 27 July, 1820. ( Note Nancy Edge was born Cummings, per her application for a widow's pension- see Monroe County Ohio Genealogical Records, Vol I pg 72 & 73, also 4 - for additional information and later applications for widow's pension. John Edge died according to that information 4 July 1830.

I must apologize for having done a real NO-NO as far as genealogy is concerned! I assumed that I had the right George Washington Edge as the ship's captain! My research has proven to be insufficient.

Does anyone have evidence as to who this person really is?

At the time, I questioned a west Florida man's running coal from the east coast during the Civil War, but I thought that there couldn't be others with that name (after all, I hadn't seen any!). Further, there were no Edges, (besides "Seaborn") listed in census records for the east coast. Not only have I recently come across two more George Washington Edges, but also found a whole family of which I was unaware in Duval County, FL. Mea culpa!
